BET Centric Sip & Share ‘Single Ladies’ A Beyond Brunch Experience [RECAP]

Letoya Luckett

Over the weekend, I had the pleasure of attending an event for the television series “Single Ladies” titled Sip and Share: A Beyond Brunch Experience. The show returned on March 18th to Centric, the first network designed for black women. Spring was definitely in full effect with the decor to the attendees’ style of dress. “Single Ladies” cast member Letoya Luckett and Head Costume Designer on the show Anthony Williams were the panelist for this event and boy did they entertain the crowd. Letoya Luckett is as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside and THE Anthony Williams is crazy, cool, and so over the top amazing. Their discussion included how African American women are taking Hollywood by storm in more roles, sisterhood, as well as Letoya’s initial reaction to being subjected to Anthony’s decision to keep her character in black and white until he says otherwise. Attendees were also showcased for their style choices for the event during a style segment curated by the awesome Michaela Angela Davis. Here are some photos from the event:

June Ambrose Links Up w/ Jay-Z’s the “Life + Times” For New Show “Style Boost”

june and the intern contest winnerOur favorite fashionista who Jay-Z refers to as “the Style Architect” will grace us with a show once again titled Style Boost. Although we loved her debut to television on Styled By June, June felt as though it just wasn’t the right fit for her. In her chat with Brandice Henderson, CEO and founder of Harlem’s Fashion Row, you can get all the deets in the series titled “Conversations.” (harlemsfashionrow.com/) I’m sure all the style socials out there can’t wait to see what the show will entail. What would you like her to talk about? I would like to know the logistics into landing a spot as an intern not so much for the fashion of it all but the business side of it. I want the goods to her business development. So proud to see June blossom. She’s such an inspiration to all those woman that grind it out daily. She cooks, takes care of business, picks up the kids when she can, and even finds time to spend those precious moments with her husband and kids. She’s truly a renaissance woman. I geniuenly adore this woman. Can you tell? LOL

Check out some of June’s Style and her craziness via her YouTube Channel. She says “the only thing I’m finding at this Prada sample sale is overpriced leftovers lol! Love her.

June is definitely doing her thing and so can you. Go Get Your Dreams!!! XO

Ladies and Gentleman…Kerry Washington!

uptown-kerry-washington-decjan13-4aMy post for Ms. Washington is long overdue, BUT I’m here to show my love for her. Enjoy 🙂

Lady of the moment, Kerry Washington, has everyone talking about her. To some she is a breath of fresh air and to others the greatness they knew she had the potential to be. Ms. Washington started out with very humble beginnings as a young actress in the TADA! Youth Theater program and now everyone’s favorite mistress on ABC’s hit drama “Scandal”?! Yea I said it lol.  Kerry’s acting is everything BUT to the fashionistas out there, her wardrobe is to die for and worth discussing.

According to Scandal Costume Designer , Lyn Paolo, Olivia Pope’s wardrobe  was put together to adhere to typical closet behavior. Meaning, everything Olivia Pope wears isn’t “thrown away” after each episode however, a piece of clothing is worn again with another bottom or blouse. I love this aspect because it makes Olivia Pope that much more real to us. Lyn Paolo states in the interview that they use particular color schemes that fall in sync with Olivia’s mood (genius!). I think we all agree that we want to be Olivia Pope in some way or another. She’s fierce in her work and always dresses to the nines. I’d take a substitute love life though lol Ain’t nobody got time for that!

I have provided a few of my personal favorite  looks from the show! Enjoy XO 🙂

Inspired by this article? Things you can do to be among these fabulous women!

1. First ask yourself,  “Is this what I want?”- No need to waste your time or anyone else’s if you’re not going to take it seriously. If you answer yes, then don’t hold back. Give it everything you’ve got!

2.Intern– start your career off by learning from people or organizations that may in return hire you

3. Get active– start a blog, make a video…you just need to do something. What’s the point of talent if you never showcase it?

4. Network– fear has no room in this arena. Either you want it or you don’t. You have to start the conversation about your dreams with someone if you want to get connected to the right people to make it happen. I’m not saying tell everyone your dreams because people will try and discourage you. You just have to discern those who are for you and those who are against you.

[Video] June Ambrose’s Word of Advice to Aspiring Fashion Stylist

20121205-112026.jpg

In light of the interview I did on up and coming celebrity stylist Shun Black, I chose to dig up some information for the fashionistas out there who are trying to break into the fashion industry as a fashion stylist. I chose to enlist in the help of fashion guru June Ambrose.

In this interview with Media Beats, Mrs. June gives away the secret in acquiring clothes for clients as well as the biggest mistake newbies make when entering the business. She also gives her reasoning for selecting who she chooses to take under her wing (word to all who are trying to intern for her).

“Anyone I bring onto my team, I try to treat it like a learning experience,” says June.

Mrs. Ambrose goes on to further say, “Truly, if I am taking someone on it’s because I have something to offer them and I hope they are willing to do the work and prove to me they are worthy of being around.”

Check out the interview below:

Up and Coming x Fashion Stylist x Shun Black

1. Tell me about yourself.

My name is Shuntrel Crishea Black. I am a 20 year old college student at Alabama A&M University. Born and raised in Birmingham, AL where I leave behind an amazingly supportive family. I have always had a love for fashion since grade school but college ultimately encouraged me to forcefully go after my dreams! I am an up and coming Celebrity fashion stylist; however, I have started my journey of styling while making my fellow peers look and feel AMAZING.

2. How does being a college student help with your aspirations of being a great fashion stylist?

Being a college student definitely takes my drive and level of determination to the next level. I am surrounded by young entrepreneurs that only motivates me to become the next June Ambrose…. Which is btw my favorite Fashion stylist to the stars!!! College prepares you and I must say, I am prepared!

3. Why did you choose to be a fashion stylist versus a career as a fashion designer?

Wow… I get this question quite frequently lol. Honestly, I can’t see myself sitting behind a sewing machine creating garments.. THAT is a skill that is not designed for me! Major respect for our lovely designers.. you are truly Dope!! Styling is my thing and it’s by far not the easiest job but it provides an outlet for me. To see pieces come ALIVE that are folded and hung gives me LIFE!

4. In your eyes, what does it mean to have style?

Style is personal. Its follows you EVERYWHERE! It tells ppl exactly who you are without you speaking a word. There are no guidelines within your style. Pulling your inner personality and spilling it into your “look” makes the little fashion world go around.. lol. Expressing yourself while looking effortlessly fabulous… is.. well.. STYLE.

5. What can we expect from you in the next year?

Within the next year I will be the go-to girl when you are ready to look your absolute BEST. I cater to my clients and within a year my brand, ShunBlackstyle, will spread across the nation…. Lol that sounds pretty far huh? I don’t really have a master plan but I am progressing each and every day… within a year I’ll be way better off than today.

6. What is your philosophy for being consistent in your line of work?

I like to cater to my clients as stated before. I love to know them inside and out before I commence to transform. When I say transform I don’t mean stripping them of their personality, I mean knowing their “likes” and “loves” and taking it to the next level. Staying true to my mission and being as understanding as possible will keep my work consistent.

7. How can someone keep up with you?

Favorite question of the day!!! Please feel free to follow me on Twitter : Shunblackstyle Email: sblack_92@hotmail.com

I’m sure this will be the first of many times the fabulous Shun Black will grace Dawn Fresh! I wish her the best in her endeavors and don’t forget to check out her work below!

Oppurtunities x Fashion Week

Fashion Week comes and goes each year; however, I’ve never been. Just as I began to write this post, Rihanna’s track Right Now from her new album Unapologetic starts blasting through my headphones.

Tomorrow’s way too far away
And we can’t get back yesterday
But we young right now
We got right now
So get up right now
Cause all we got is Right Now

Like a lot of people do, I made tons of excuse as to why I can’t go this year. However, I’ve realized that the only way I can achieve is to go for whatever it is I want to do wholeheartedly. In addition, Rihanna is right about not getting back what we did yesterday. So if you’re like me and you enjoy the world of fashion and you’ve never been, let’s agree to apply for a volunteer position so we can make our dreams a reality sooner than later.

If you would like to volunteer for New York Fashion Week, apply here: www.mbfashionweek.com
